Goddess Girls is a fantasy book series written by Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams. It focuses on the four primary characters Athena, Persephone, Aphrodite, and Artemis. Based off of Greek mythology, it takes a contemporary spin, depicting the deities as tweens who attend Mount Olympus Academy (MOA) to develop their divine skills. It has incorporated Egyptian, Norse, and Chinese mythology in the books Aphrodite the Diva and The Girl Games. The first four books were adapted into graphic novels, written by David Campiti and illustrated by Glass House Graphics.
Other series Holub and Williams co-wrote are Heroes in Training, Grimmtastic Girls, and Thunder Girls. Their "early chapter book series," Little Goddess Girls, has the similar premise of the four main protagonists placed in various situations.
Background[]
Holub answered series of questions on Goodreads, where she revealed how the series came to be: "Suzanne Williams and I were talking one day and decided to try to write together. Since we love mythology, we got the idea for the Goddess Girls series about girls who attend Mount Olympus Academy. We thought Zeus would make a great principal, and wrote each book as a twist on a Greek myth." She stated that they write "every four months," where they "always working on several of them (in different stages) at a time."
Both have "shelves of mythology reference books," and sometimes scope websites "in order to get the best, most reliable scoop on various myths and mythological characters." One of the references they use is Edith Hamilton. Regarding the collaboration process, Holub wrote, "Suzanne Williams and I lucked out in that we have writing strengths that complement each other's, we both meet deadlines, and we get along. We talk out the story plan and discuss differing views on where to head a story or on character development, during a synopsis stage. This really helps eliminate disagreements and misunderstandings. It's a good writing partnership!" While the two live far apart, they "spend a lot of time on the phone and emailing." She continued, "We usually get together about once or twice a year to hang out or go see our editors."
